Why Most People Who Try To Break Into Cyber Never Get Hired

It's not that they aren't smart. And it's not that nobody is hiring. It's that they follow the path everyone tells them to follow, and it ends with a pile of certificates and nothing to prove they can do the job.

If a degree and a stack of certs got you hired, there would be no shortage of cyber professionals.

Yet every week, people with both can't get a single interview.

So what are employers actually looking for?

What you think will work

“I'll get a degree.”

Ask yourself

  • Who is teaching you? Have they ever worked a real incident, or only read about one?
  • Why do graduates still hear “we need someone with experience”?
  • Why do you study for years before you touch the tools a security team uses every day?
  • Who checks that what you are learning is what teams use today?

A degree shows you can study. It does not show an employer you can investigate an alert.

What you think will work

“I'll collect certifications.”

Ask yourself

  • Why can you buy “brain dumps” (leaked exam questions) for many of the most popular certs, Security+ included?
  • If people can memorise the answers, pass, and forget them a week later, what does a pass really prove?
  • Hiring managers know this too. So why would a cert alone get you hired?
  • Why does nobody selling you a cert course tell you this?

A cert can be crammed. Experience can't. A hiring manager wants to see you work an incident.

What you think will work

“I'll teach myself.”

Ask yourself

  • Who tells you what to learn next?
  • Who tells you when you are doing it wrong?
  • Where do you practise on real tools like a SIEM and EDR when they are built for companies, not beginners?
  • Who looks at your CV and tells you the truth?

You collect fragments, but nothing you can show.

The trap nobody warns you about

Every entry-level job asks for experience
You can't get experience without the job

That loop is why the degree, the cert and the YouTube playlist don't get you out of it. The only way out is experience you can prove.

How we get you there

Meet Sohail Ershadi, Founder of CyberXcel

Most cybersecurity trainers spent their careers in classrooms. I spent mine in the field — over a decade as a cybersecurity consultant across Australia and the Middle East, dealing with real threats and real consequences inside enterprise environments.

What most people don't know: I wasn't always in tech. I was a musician first. I made a complete transition into IT, then into cybersecurity — with no traditional pathway and plenty of people who said it couldn't be done.

CyberXcel exists because I got tired of watching talented people waste years on programs never designed to get them hired. Every element — the mentor model, the enterprise labs, the recruiter support — answers one question: what would actually get someone hired?

"If you're ready to stop going in circles and start building something real — I'd like to show you how."

We Only Work With 12 New Students Per Month — Spots Are Limited.

Cybersecurity is booming, and we personally coach each student through every step of their transition. Because of that, we limit new enrollments to 12 per month. If you’re serious about making the move — now’s your chance to get personal guidance and accountability.
